A fruit store, kept and opened up
The stone store had stood empty for years at the edge of a working orchard. Its walls were sound. Its roof was not.
We kept every stone wall and the five arched openings. A new oak roof sits on top, with one long rooflight down the middle.
Eight rooms around a long table
Guests sleep in eight rooms along both sides of the building. Four sit behind the old arches, and the middle arch is now the front door. Every room has a deep window seat and a view of the trees.
The middle of the building is one long room with one long table. Breakfast is served there, and the owners eat there too.
The building in three drawings
The plan is simple on purpose. One room for everyone, eight rooms for rest, and the orchard at both ends.
Materials that are soft and easy to care for
Guest houses work hard. Every surface had to look good on day one and still look good after a busy summer.
