A calm house on a working quay

The clients wanted a home for a family of five on a plot by the old fish market. The quay is busy in the morning and quiet by evening. They asked for rooms that feel calm at both times.

The site faces south over the harbour. Wind comes off the water most of the year, and salt reaches every surface.

02

Two volumes that share one view

We split the house in two. A tall oak-clad volume holds the living room, with bedrooms above. A low concrete wing holds the kitchen and opens onto the quay.

Both share one long south wall of glass and oak. Deep reveals keep out the high summer sun and let the low winter sun reach the back of the rooms.

A plan drawn around the light

  1. 01
Walls follow the line of the quay

The outer walls sit on the old harbour wall, so the house keeps the line of the street.

  2. 02
    Every main room faces south

Living, kitchen and dining share one long wall of glass. The stair, study and boot room sit to the north.

  3. 03
    Joinery does the furnishing

Built-in oak benches, shelves and a window seat mean the rooms need very little loose furniture.

The materials, used throughout the house

We kept the palette short so the house reads as one piece. Each material copes well with salt air and gets better with age.
