Claude Cowork is now in every chat: what it means

Claude Cowork went from research preview to part of every chat in 2026. What it does, which plans have it, and practical ways teams can use it.

Since 16 September 2026, Claude Cowork has been part of ordinary Claude chats. Any conversation on a supported plan can now take on multi-step work, such as reading a folder of files, building a document or running a task on a schedule.

Which plans have Claude Cowork in chat

The combined experience is rolling out in stages to Pro, Max and Ultra plans on web, desktop and mobile. There is nothing to turn on. On Team plans it is in beta, and on Enterprise plans it is available where an owner has turned it on. It became generally available for Enterprise on 23 October. Free plans will follow, with no date yet.

If your message box still shows separate “Chat” and “Cowork” options, you do not have the new experience yet. Your existing chats, Cowork tasks, projects, connectors and skills carry over when it arrives.

How Cowork got here

Cowork started as a desktop research preview on 12 January 2026, for Max subscribers on macOS. Claude worked on your files inside an isolated virtual machine on your computer. Pro subscribers got access four days later.

The main steps since then:

  • 24 and 25 February: a plugin marketplace for Team and Enterprise plans, then scheduled tasks.
  • 17 March: Dispatch, which keeps one conversation going across phone and desktop.
  • 23 March: computer use in Cowork, as a research preview for Pro and Max.
  • 9 April: general availability on macOS and Windows.
  • 7 July: Cowork on the web and mobile, in beta. Scheduled tasks now run with no device online.
  • 25 August: memory shared between chat and Cowork.
  • 16 September: Cowork and chat became one Claude.
  • 23 October: the combined experience became generally available for Enterprise.

Dispatch is no longer offered to new users in the combined experience. Existing users can keep using it for now.

What changes in your day

Before the merge, you chose between a chat and a separate Cowork session. Now you ask for what you need in one conversation, whether it is a quick answer or a task with several steps.

In practice, requests like these now work in an ordinary conversation:

  • “Read the three supplier quotes in this folder and build a comparison table.”
  • “Draft a proposal from these meeting notes and our last two proposals.”
  • “Every Monday, summarise last week’s enquiries and flag any that need a reply.”
  • “Turn this report into a ten-slide deck for the board.”

Claude can also use the apps you connect, such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 or Slack, while it works on a task. That lets a task pull in the information it needs without copying and pasting.

You can choose how often Claude checks in. On Pro, Max, Ultra and Team plans, the default lets Claude keep working while automated safety checks run before each action. On Enterprise plans, the default asks you before each action.

Claude Docs, Slides and Design

Claude Docs and Claude Slides arrived in beta with the September update. Claude creates documents and decks you can keep editing, present or download as PowerPoint or PDF, rather than text you copy into another app.

Claude Design launched from Anthropic Labs on 17 April as a research preview for visual work such as designs, prototypes and one-pagers. It now also works inside your conversations.

Claude in PowerPoint launched as a research preview in February, for teams that prefer to stay in Microsoft Office.

What Cowork is good at, and where other tools fit

Cowork works best for tasks a person starts or schedules, such as research, reports, documents and file work. Everything you do counts towards your plan’s usage limits, and long tasks use more than a quick question.

Some jobs belong inside your business systems instead. A website form that sorts enquiries, or a nightly sync between your CRM and a spreadsheet, needs to run on its own every time. Those automations use the Claude API, which is billed by usage, separately from chat plans. It is worth setting a spending limit. Max, Ultra and Team plans now include some monthly API credits towards this.

Many businesses end up using both. Staff use Claude for their own work, while a few key processes run as automations in the background.

Getting started

  1. Pick one weekly task that involves gathering information from several places, such as a status report.
  2. Connect the apps it needs and describe the result you want, with an example if you have one.
  3. Schedule it once the output looks right, and review the first few runs.
